The 8.1L engine is a gas guzzler. We've been on a quest to increase gas mileage and horsepower. We installed a UPD Carbon Fiber intake kit that came with a K&N filter. Although it arrived with a filter that K&N's reference material says is for the smaller engines, Russell at UPD said their tests show the wrong filter is more effective in delivering horsepower -- therefore it is the filter that they used in the design of the induction. Installation time took approximately 30 minutes.

A Fuel Injection Performance Kit (FIPK) reduces intake restriction as it smoothes and straightens air flow. This allows the vehicle's engine to inhale a larger volume of air than the factory air filter assembly. More air means more usable power and torque. Plus, the K&N filter is washable and reusable. Please note that this information is not meant to serve as a guide on how to do this yourself -- it is to show what could be done if you decided to have one installed on an Avalanche.

Before we started (side)

1. Make sure you have all the parts you need. In this case, we needed an open end wrench for the negative battery terminal, and a flathead screwdriver for everything else. To prevent funkiness with the mass air filter sensor, use the open end wrench to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.

2. Use the flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on the both sides of the mass air sensor, and the air tube at the throttle body. Disconnect the intake hose from the mass air sensor, and being careful not to unplug the mass air sensor, disconnect the mass air sensor from the factory air lid. Temporarily move the air sensor out of the way. Disconnect the factory air tube assembly from the throttle body and remove it from the engine.

3. Loosen the factory screws on the factory air lid. Remove the factory air lid and filter.

4. Install the self-adhesive seal on the new air lid. Install the new filter and air lid.

5. Connect the mass air sensor to the new air lid, pointing the electronics toward the firewall. Connect the new rubber gasket to the other end of the mass air filter, then connect the new air tube to the new rubber gasket. Using the old throttle body rubber gasket, connect the new air tube to the throttle body. Tighten all the clamps and screws until snug. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
